Marling tweeted on 14 June, along with the photo beneath: "When u find your well loved copy of a book & remember how much you stole from it #billcallahan #letterstoemmabowlcut" (note the underscore)

NME describing the second cut of the album ONCE I WAS AN EAGLE:

The near-title track segues straight out of the opener [TAKE THE NIGHT OFF]– part two, if you will. It's still a strum with the odd flurry of bashed tom-toms and frenetic acoustic, but organ plays around behind Marling as she growls, "I've damned near got no dignity left". A touch of strings fattens it up but we're drifting to part three… [YOU KNOW]

I WAS AN EAGLE

Laura Marling

So your grandmother stands to me
A woman I would be proud to be
And you say she reminds you of me
Every little boy is so naive

I will not be a victim of romance
I will not be a victim of circumstance
Chance or circumstance or romance, or any man
Who could get his dirty little hands on me

So your grandfather sounds like me
Head up shoulders back and proud to be
Every little girl is so naive
Falling in love with the first man that she sees

I will not be a victim of romance
I will not be a victim of circumstance
Chance or circumstance or romance, or any man
Who could get his dirty little hands on me

When we were in love
If we were
When we were in love
I was an eagle and you were a dove

Today I will feel something other than regret
Pass me a glass and a half-smoked cigarette
I've damn near got no dignity left

When we were in love If we were
When we were in love
I was an eagle and you were a dove

When we were in love If we were
When we were in love
You were a dove and I rose above you and preyed

Marling uses this song to gently chide those who would compare her to the likes of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. My own view is that Dylan and Mitchell often sounded like Marling, but had no way of knowing it at the time.

TAKE THE NIGHT OFF

Click here for the version of this lyric that is part of the short film WHEN BRAVE BIRDS SAVED.

You said you're gonna leave babe
Be gone from me
Be gone from my mind babe
Let a little lady be
I want you to want me
I want you to know
I don't care where you've gone babe
I care where you go

Take the night off
Be there for me
Take the night off
Be there for me

I didn't understand where you had gone babe
Didn't know you'd be right back
I didn't hear the night song
Calling you into the black
I didn't ask you to save me
Not when you knew me well
I wouldn't ask you even to behave for me
I know there's more than that

Take the night off
And be there for me
Take the night off
Be there for me

I WAS AN EAGLE

So your grandmother stands to me
A woman I would be proud to be
And you say she reminds you of me
Every little boy is so naive

I will not be a victim of romance
I will not be a victim of circumstance
Chance or circumstance or romance, or any man
Who could get his dirty little hands on me

So your grandfather sounds like me
Head up shoulders back and proud to be
Every little boy is so naive
Falling in love with the first girl that he sees

I will not be a victim of romance
I will not be a victim of circumstance
Chance or circumstance or romance, or any man
Who could get his dirty little hands on me

When we were in love (if we were)
When we were in love
I was an eagle
And you were a dove

Today I will feel something other than regret
Pass me a glass and half-smoked cigarette
I've damn near got no dignity left
I've damn near got no dignity left

I will not be a victim of romance
I will not be a victim of circumstance

When we were in love
You were a dove
And I rose above you and preyed

YOU KNOW

Damn all those people who don't lose control
Who will never take a foot out of life
You might not think that I care
But you don't know what I know

And damn all those hippies
Who stomp empty footed
Upon all that's good
All that's pure in the world
You might not care what I think
But you don't know what I know

Well I saw those mothers
Who do all they can
Just to take their thoughts out of the line
I might not know what it's like
But I'm glad that you know

Give me a minute there
Just a minute more
It'll come back to me

I was so sure that you
Free wheelin troubadour
You took my mind off the sea
And you know I know I know
I know that you know

You asked me blind once
If I was a child once
I said I'm really not sure
How can you know
How can you know
What it is you don't know

Another verse is added at the end of YOU KNOW in the album version.

BREATHE

There is a little more to the BREATHE song that is not included in this video. See BREATHE lyrics page.

We were a pair once
With so much to spare once
We were a child then I'm sure
We were a child then
We are children no more

Give me a minute there
Just a minute more
It'll come back to me

I was so sure that you
Freewheelin troubadour
You took my mind off the sea
And you know I know I know
I know that you know

You came here to tell me something
I already know
But before the dawn is the darkest
I can go
The dark before the storm
Is what leaves me here to breathe
So breathe

Us of constant banging
Throwing fists against the wall
Screaming at the earth for what
It's done to one and all
You came here to tell me something
I already know
Breathe
Breathe

How cruel I was to you
Cruel things I do
How cruel you are to me
How cruel man can be
Well I wrote you a book
But I left it out in the rain
Left it there to dry
But it got rained on once again
